Stretch Marks | Causes & How to Deal With Them

Updated: May 9, 2021

Stretch marks, known medically as striae, are white or red streaks that can appear anywhere on your body, especially on your belly, arms, breasts, thighs, and buttocks.

Here is the surprise, it's not female-exclusive! Males can also develop stretch marks just as women can.

It's more common among women because of pregnancy which, if you ask me, is a very beautiful thing to always remind you of how wonderful women are giving birth to a new life.

Stretch Marks Causes & Types

We can categorize stretch marks according to their cause:

  • During puberty, the body is subjected to many changes due to growth spurts. It can result in stretch marks appearance.

  • After pregnancy, the skin stretches out for the baby to grow and develop. After labor, the skin becomes loose. Stretching the skin then becoming loose can cause stretch marks.

  • Same as above, losing and gaining weight can also cause stretch marks.

  • Diseases related to Adrenal disorders.

  • Continuous use of topical corticosteroids.

How to get rid of them

Unfortunately, stretch marks are permanent. They don't have an ultimate fix, however, you can make them less noticeable.

If you want to treat them at home, you can either use a hyaluronic acid lotion/ cream to fill in the marks or apply products containing retinol.

You can also seek your dermatologist's help in making your stretch marks less noticeable by laser therapy, chemical peeling, ultrasound, and radiofrequency.

Although some people swear by shea butter, cacao butter, and almond oil, there is no scientific evidence that they can affect stretch marks in any way.

Making newly-formed stretch marks less noticeable is way either than covering the tracks of an old one, so make sure to take quick action once they appear.

While stretch marks can be a nuisance to some, put in your mind that they almost appear after a life-turning event that you should be proud of like pregnancy, weight gain, weight loss, overcoming diseases, etc... Remember to love yourself and feel comfortable and confident in the body that does so much for you.
